It is that time of year again where impeccably dressed families will be popping up all around Lincoln Park.
That's right. Family Photo Shoot Season is here!
And in the last few years the outfit game has been raised for these photos. Matching PJs are still adorable and we're not discouraging that at all! But if you're not interested in your holiday card list seeing you in your jammies we've got some ideas for planning the perfectly coordinated but not matchy-matchy family photo outfits.
Pick a Central Outfit
Aka your outfit! While we certainly encourage buying something new for the occasion the most important factor is how much you love your outfit. Pick colors that are flattering on you and that you feel confident in. Then pick complimentary colors to your outfit.
"Use your spice drawer as color inspiration," says Darcy Martinez, a fashion photographer in Chicago. And she's spot on! Especially in the fall these colors all go well together.
And every husband should have a decent pair of khakis he can put on for these pictures.
Use Tone to Your Advantage
Meaning you can put your kids in the same color even if it isn't a matching item. We put together this blue on blue outfit and loved the way it gives the illusion of a dress (lengthening your legs and making you look taller) with the versatility of separates (being able to put these pieces to use long after your cards have hit the mailbox).
You could have your son wear jeans and your daughter in a dress and jean jacket. Or your husband in a hunter green sweater and you in a more mossy green top.
The Rule of Threes
You've heard it in all the #shelfiegoals posts you've liked but groups of three are visually appealing. With that in mind try to pick three main colors for your family's outfits.
Some of our favorites: (And we saved more on our Pinterest Page)
- White/cream, Green and Denim
- Camel Brown, Black and Burgundy
- Brown, Blue and Cream
- Mustard Yellow, Burnt Orange, Olive Green
Add In Some Texture
For the city oftentimes our photos are around hard structures; the nature preserve arch in Lincoln Park with the city buildings behind it for example. And there's nothing wrong with that! We love our city and it is part of our family so why not show it off.
But with this in mind adding in some knit, mohair or teddy bear textures to your outfit will help soften the overall image. Corduroy and leather are classic fall textures too. And leather doesn't have to just be your boots - try a leather pant! We've got some fabulous choices that flatter everyone, so come check them out.
Add In Some Pattern
Delicately patterned dresses are readily available and plaid is always available for men so find some pattern for a few members of the family. Scarves and bandanas can add a touch of pattern as well.
Breaking up the color block will make the photos more visually appealing and help give off the "we woke up like this" vibe!
But Above All
Laughter and silliness are some of our favorite images to see and once you get the kids to do their silly dance for the camera they'll get some of their energy out and the more posed shots might be easier.
We can't wait to see your family photos this year!
Thank you to Raquel and Lauren for being our models. Thank you to Darcy for the first, second, third and fourth photos. Last photo credit goes to Erin.
